Large and hillside lots; the town regulates hillside sites (10%+ slope) and building closely, so confirm any permits and street use with the town.

Big lots, mountain views, careful planning

Paradise Valley is a residential town in Maricopa County, incorporated in 1961, tucked between Phoenix and Scottsdale. Mummy Mountain sits in the middle of town, Camelback Mountain forms the southern edge, and the Piestewa Peak area runs along the west side. Much of the town was settled after World War II on lots of one to five acres, and it's home to well-known resorts such as Sanctuary on Camelback, Mountain Shadows and Camelback Inn.

Bigger lots sound easy for a crane, but the distance from the street to the house can be long, and the homes on the mountain slopes add grade and limited setup room.

Know the town's rules before lift day

Paradise Valley takes its building and land rules seriously. Hillside sites with a slope of 10 percent or more fall under a dedicated article of the town's zoning ordinance, and new hillside homes go through a Hillside Building Committee review. Grading and clearing in the hillside area isn't allowed until plans are approved and permits are issued.

A crane lift usually isn't construction on its own, but it's often part of a project that is: a remodel, a new spa pad or a mechanical upgrade. We're not the authority on what your project needs, so:

  • Ask your contractor or the Town of Paradise Valley whether your project needs a permit.
  • If the truck must set up in the street, ask the town about right-of-way use.
  • If you're in an HOA or private road association, check their notice requirements too.

HVAC change-outs on large homes

Large homes often run several systems, and some of that equipment sits on flat roof sections or behind parapets. HVAC contractors call us to set new package units, condensers and heat pumps and lower the old ones in the same trip, so the crew isn't carrying equipment across a finished yard. See HVAC crane lifts and our page for HVAC contractors.

Spas, trusses and heavy pieces

On a Paradise Valley property, the backyard may be an acre away from the street, or terraced into the side of a mountain. When a spa, a set of trusses for a casita, or a heavy outdoor feature can't travel across landscaping or through the house, the crane takes it over the roof. Start with spa and hot tub lifts or truss lifts.

How to get a Paradise Valley lift confirmed

Every lift is different. Call 602-615-0712 or text 623-258-8361 with the weight of the item, how far it needs to go and where the truck can park, and he'll confirm the lift. On long or sloped lots, a photo from the setup spot toward the landing area is the most useful thing you can send. Skyhook Crane is licensed and insured.

Frequently asked questions

Does Paradise Valley require a permit for a crane lift?

It depends on the project and where the truck sets up. Paradise Valley has detailed rules for building and hillside sites, and the lift is often part of a permitted project such as a remodel or mechanical upgrade. Check with your contractor or the Town of Paradise Valley, especially if the truck will be in the street.

Can you lift on a hillside home near Camelback or Mummy Mountain?

Sometimes. The truck needs firm, level ground, so on steep lots the setup is usually the driveway, motor court or street. Then it's about reach and the weight of the item. Send photos from the setup area toward the landing spot, and Don will confirm whether our truck can do it or if a larger crane is needed.

My lot is over an acre. Is that too far for the crane?

Not necessarily. What matters is the distance from where the truck can safely park to where the item lands, not the lot size. Many larger lots have drives that let the truck get close to the house. Tell us the item's weight and roughly how far it travels, and Don will confirm.
